very very eventful day in the land of babies

omg today was the most eventful day EVER. the morning on the labor and delivery floor started out slow and shall i say quite boring. i was getting to the point where i seriously just wanted to go home. but then all of a sudden i see a 14 year old pregnant mother being wheel chaired towards me by, seriously, no less than 5 nurses. she was like being thrown to the OR while screaming at the top top top of her lungs. we got to the OR and literally there were 6 physicians and like 20 nurses in the room. it was chaos. i seriously did not know what to do. she was at only 25 weeks and she had twins!!!! she wouldn't stop screaming and she kicked so it was crazy hard to help her. the anesthesiologists quickly sedated her and the doctors got to work. they pullled out 2 babies probably weighing 2 pounds each. honestly it was like a scene out of grey's anatomy. it was thrilling, exciting, scary, and just soooo crazy! i seriously still can't believe i witnessd a crash. crazy crazy crazy! anyways the day doesnt stop there. it was now MY patient's turn to deliver via C section. i prepped her and got her ready to go. she only spoke Spanish so that was difficult. but once the surgery started the surgeons found a tear in her uterus! it was scary bc in her previous C section she had lost her baby at 25 weeks. but after a while the surgeons were able to repair her uterus. her baby however, was still sent to the NICU for further evaluation. and then as I thought the day was winding down, another patient decided to electively abort her 21 week old baby. she had just found out today that she was 5 months pregnant and that the fetus had a possibility of having congenital anomalies because the mother was taking cumidon. she decides to terminate the pregnancy but the fetus was delivered without any congenital problems. it would have survived if the patient had let the doctors do everything they could possibly do. what ended up happening however was that we were left to hold the baby until it died on its own. i had the chance to hold the 21 week old baby and let me tell u it was the SADDEST THING i have ever done. this human being was in my arms and we had to just let it die. it was so so small and it had eyelashes and eyebrows and little fingers and toes. it was really hard ot let that baby go. i think that was the hardest part of being a L & D nurse, having these new innocent lives die. that was really hard. the last thing before we left after 13 hours was finding out that another patinet was aborting her 21 week old baby because it had downs syndrome! i was sooooo mad because the baby was healthy, the only thing was its Downs. there are so many ethical issues in OB/GYN and today was a tough one.

but anyways, even though today was heavy on the heart and quite tough it was really exciting at the same time. i never appreciated life as much as i did today.
