open your heart

i scrubbed in on an open heart surgery! it was AMAAAAAZING!!! it was so interesting and the heart is seriously the most fascinating organ in the body. i got to stand at the head of the patient's bed and watch the entire surgery while the surgeon and the PA explained the procedure to me. i got to see the heart pumping and perfusing blood thru the body. the PA also showed me what happens when we, as nurses, shock the patient. when a patient needs to get shocked with paddles, the heart is pumping without any rhythm. it basically looks like a bag of worms. after it is shocked tho the heart begins to pump again in a synchronized fashion. it's pretty amazing when you see a beating heart so up and personal. i know i know..... i sound like the biggest dork ever but seriously, one of the most fascinating things i have ever seen. <3

is there really a nursing shortage???

that's the question on my mind constantly now. people always say "o you're a nurse, you'll get a job with no problems" but boy are they so wrong. tonight, my roomies and i went to a new grad info meeting at hoag hospital in newport. when we first got there, there were soooo many people, they TURNED US AWAY!!! ahhh anyways they finally let us in later but there were seriously AT LEAST 200 people there for maybe, o like 11 spots. it's a jungle out there, cut-throat nurses who would do anything to get a job. i was just gonna go to see if i could get an interview and "practice" since i was going to go back home anyways but yea, definitely may not even get an interview. the prospects at home are even worse than the job opportunities down here in so-cal. freakin economy!! of course, right, out of any other year where i would easily be able to get a RN position, it HAD to be this year. i'm like so confused, should i stay here or go home? ahhh i talked to my mom and she doesn't seem too worried but i am so stressed it's not even funni. please god, i'm crossing my fingers.

o i forgot to mention that out of 200 people I got chosen to win a raffle prize. lol so funni. i was like "um can i exchange my beach mat for a job? thanks" thats my luck tho, i mean at least i got something? lol

ahhahha sometimes i feel just like this person. i look over to the next person and i feel a little more accomplished. ahhahha SHH!
